Houston Dome May Help Environment

The science of mega engineering says we can save Houston with a Dome. Imagine building a huge Dome that covers the entire city, that is higher than Houston's skyscrapers.

One solution to counter the almost overwhelming environmental challenges facing Houston is to cover it with a giant geodesic dome. You can watch the video at the Discovery channel and explore how a giant geodesic dome may save the city from a grim environmental future.

Houston, Texas is the fourth most populous city in the U.S., yet it is also the city visited constantly by hurricanes and other natural disasters. Last year's hurricane caused the city $10 billion.

The city now plans to build the Houston dome area that will stretch over 21 Million square feet and could become the biggest structure with the largest roof in the world.

Houston Dome's broadest panels will be 15 feet across. It will take 147,000 panels to cover the city of Houston. Glass will not work for Houston Dome. It will be so heavy that it can't hold. Houston Dome will require a much lighter material. It may come from the German city of Bremen, from a factory of Vector Foil Company.

Vector Foiltec invented the use of Texlon® ETFE, the climatic envelope, over twenty five years ago and has successfully developed and promoted the use of this innovative technology worldwide. This is light polymer and is the future of glass.

This material, called ETFE is the only material that will make a fuller city-size dome possible, even for a city like Houston. At just one percent of glass, ETFE is described as 99 percent nothing. Without ETF the Houston dome can never become reality. It is so light that 99 percent lighter than glass is tremendous change.

Since it's not possible to stop the life in Houston to build the Dome and army of dirigibles will be used to complete the construction.

Houston Dome will take years of construction and billions of dollars. The Dome is designed to protect a city from a category-5 hurricane. The ETFEpanels and the space-frame steel structure that supports them are the key. ETFE can withstand winds of 180 miles per hour. This is higher velocity than the strongest category 5 hurricane.

Houston Dome idea is very intriguing. But I am just left with one idea. Will Houston ever see rain? If no, is it possible to sustain an ecosystem of such a size without rain?Houston Dome's broadest panels will be 15 feet across. It will take 147,000 panels to cover the city of Houston. Some scientists think the only way to save Houston is to move it indoors, constructing a giant dome over the entire city.

The Houston Dome is an intriguing idea. If it does come to fruition, hopefully it will work better than the dome over Springfield in "The Simpson's Movie."

WWDC 2009 live

It's that time again: the annual Apple World Wide Developer's Conference and its highly anticipated keynote address. Phil Schiller ran the show this year, and while he's no Steve Jobs most observers agree that he did a pretty good job. Highlights include a revamping of the MacBook Pro line, the introduction this fall of Snow Leopard, and the announcement of a new, faster iPhone called the iPhone 3GS.

You can tune in via live.theappleblog.com or @theappleblog.

Fabric Softener Toxic Toxin Fatal Chemical Dryer Sheets

If you have been a habitual user of fabric softeners, then take note. This could be extremely important for you. According to available media reports, fabric softeners are some of the most toxic products that have been manufactured for house hold use. Check the out the chemicals they contain - chloroform, benzyl acetate and pentane. These chemicals can cause multitude of illness known to mankind like cancer, damage lungs, brain, nerves etc.

Now the double whammy is, if you heat these chemicals, they cause even more harm. If you thought that was all, there is a third whammy in this. Fabric softener chemicals when heated stick to the clothes and release their effects for a very long time. They slow reaction and release of chemicals into the air affects the well being of not only those who are wearing the clothes but also affect the people around them.

So if you have been affected by this, how do you find out? In other words what are the symptoms of issues cause by such toxic fabric softeners.

Tiredness that is not cured by resting, difficulty breathing, nervousness for no known reason, difficulty concentrating and remembering, dizziness, headaches, sick stomach, feeling faint, rashes and/or difficulty controlling body movements.

What adds to the damage is that many fabric softeners have aroma added to them, which makes them even more harmful.

What I find surprising in all this is, what were the government regulation bodies were doing all this time. How hard or easy it is to find out the damaging effects and then issue an advisory against such products. This whole thing is insane!

National Running Day

Gourmets may be guilty of looking ahead to Friday, which according to Dunkin' Donuts, is National Doughnut Day, but for fitness buffs, June 3 is a red letter day that will henceforth be venerated as National Running Day.

In lieu of parades, 5K fun runs are expected to proliferate.

So notes New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. The Boston-based maker of athletic footwear said it will join today with "thousands of runners across the nation to commemorate the inaugural National Running Day."

In a press release, New Balance said it will highlight National Running Day through content on its website www.newbalance.com and on a Facebook fan page.

"We are proud to celebrate National Running Day to showcase our brand's long-time love of running," Dan Green, New Balance's integrated marketing associate of running, said in a statement. "Through our interactive program and associate activities, we are excited to join thousands of runners across America in highlighting the healthy, positive benefits of running."

The New Balance press release said the company will commemorate National Running Day internally with a 5K fun run along the Charles River for company associates.

According to the release, the idea for a special day was created by the athletic footwear industry to promote running as a healthy, easy, and accessible form of exercise.

More information about this high holiday for jogging can be found by visitingwww.RunningDay.org, New Balance said.
